Oxford students deserve an SU that listens, supports, and truly represents them. With your support, we can restore trust, strengthen representation, and build a union that reflects our diverse student body.
Vote Shermar Pryce for Communities and Common Rooms Officer - let’s make the SU truly useful and a union we can all believe in.
About Me
I am a final-year PPE student at University College, and for the past three years, I have dedicated myself to representing and advocating for students. Growing up in South London to Jamaican immigrant parents, I understand the challenges faced by underrepresented backgrounds. This has reinforced my belief in student representation - ensuring every voice is heard, every experience valued, and every student supported.
My experience:
- University College JCR President
- Treasurer of the SU’s Campaign for BAME Students (CRAE)
- PPE Society President
- Oxford Union Social Events Officer
- University and College Ambassador
Supporting Students and Common Rooms
Common rooms are the backbone of Oxford's student life, yet they are often overburdened and under-supported. The SU has the potential to complement their work and reduce the pressure they face. The Conference of Common Rooms model presents a unique opportunity to strengthen student representation - if given real power. I will ensure it functions as an active, student-led policy-making body that shapes SU and University decisions. Beyond Common Rooms, I will push for greater SU support for Student Societies and Clubs, improving access to funding and resources to empower student-led initiatives.
How I’ll do this:
- Support Student Leaders: Provide tailored resources, handover guides, and training to equip JCR and MCR representatives with the tools they need.
- Address College Disparities: Improve the College Monitor tool, making it more user-friendly, up-to-date, and comprehensive so students can compare college policies, funding, and services.
- Streamline Room Booking: Develop a centralised platform to simplify booking rooms and event spaces across the University.
- Put Society Support in Student Hands: Push for the transfer of society registration and funding from the Proctors to the SU, ensuring these processes are student-led and directly responsive to student needs.
- Secure Better Deals for Students: Utilise collective bargaining to lower costs on local goods and services such as welfare resources and college stash.
Restoring Trust in the SU
The deeply unfortunate resignation of Dr. Addi Haran as SU President is just the latest event to expose systemic failures within the SU, including a lack of transparency and accountability. These ongoing issues have severely eroded student trust and underscored the urgent need for meaningful reform. From day one, I will work to halt and reverse the undemocratically imposed, unpopular parts of recent, wider changes, ensuring the SU is genuinely student-led and restoring its credibility as a trusted advocate for all students.
How I’ll do this:
- Revive Campaigns: Restore and reform the SU’s campaigns to amplify student voices, with a strong focus on advocacy for underrepresented groups.
- Reinstate Leadership: Bring back the role of President to provide clear leadership and accountability.
- Strengthen Oversight: Reform Trustee Board appointments and secure a student-elected majority to ensure fairness, transparency, and democratic decision-making.
- Safeguard Democracy: Introduce mandatory governance reviews to protect democratic structures and prevent future erosion.
- Make Student Voices Count: Ensure all recommendations from student consultations and referendums are binding and implemented effectively.
