Ben Farmer for Oxford SU Vice President Charities and Community

Hi, I’m Ben?, a 3rd year Geographer at Catz. I’m running to be your VP Charities and Community ?at Oxford SU, to help everyone get involved in making Oxford and the world a better place.

Tackling the Climate Crisis

Get Oxford Uni and colleges to go single-use plastic free by 2022 with switches to alternatives plus introduce regular community litter picks in Oxford’s green spaces.

Get teaching on climate change across Oxford Uni and in the community so we’re equipped to deal with the crisis of our generation.

Increase pressure at all levels to push colleges and the Uni for climate-conscious investment policies including divestment from polluting industries.

Acting on Oxford’s Housing Issues

Introduce a contract checking service and house search help for students renting to ensure they aren’t exploited by rogue landlords plus push colleges to bring their accommodation up to scratch.

Lead a joined-up action plan for colleges and the Uni to do their part in tackling Oxford’s homelessness crisis.

Empowering students in their community

Develop the SU’s Volunteering Platform into a one-stop-shop for opportunities and make it easier for students to get involved with accessible taster sessions.

Boost student charity groups and societies with sessions on key skills like social media and sponsorship from industry leaders.

Bonus pledge

Set up a new Oxford Parkrun in Uni parks providing a free weekly 5km for students and the community to come together and run!

Why Ben?

I love getting stuck in, solving problems and helping to make a difference! Throughout my time at Oxford I’ve been involved in a range of projects tackling inequality and the climate crisis:

  • RAG President for 2018-19: raised £42k for our charities and introduced new events like the bungee jump, Santa dash and the student charity awards.
  • Oxford Geography Society Access Officer: established a new study day and alternative prospectus.
  • Oxford Hub Project Co-Ordinator 2018-19 for Forest Schools: got primary school kids and Uni students into the outdoors to learn and care for nature together!

Back Ben. Never too small to make a difference.
