Brasenose Room Ballot Referendum
Should the room ballot be re-drawn?
Motion to re-draw the room ballot.
Mandate the President, I.T. Rep and/or Domestic Rep to redo the room ballot where there are witnesses to the randomisation process.
Vote YES to have a new room ballot be drawn.
Vote NO to use the existing room ballot for room signings this year.
The original motion text was as follows:
This JCR notes that:
- The room ballot is a necessary way to decide the order that students get to choose their rooms for the following academic year.
- It is the responsibility of the outgoing and incoming JCR Committees to ensure the room ballot is conducted with transparency.
- It is vital that the room ballot is conducted with complete transparency so as to maintain trust and a sense of fairness within and between the JCR Committee to all JCR members.
- This year, the randomisation of the balloting process was conducted without the witnessing and supervision of the President, Domestic Rep and/or Accommodation Manager that has been the unofficial standard for previous ballots.
This JCR further notes that:
- The ballot was conducted in good faith, however;
- It is fair and correct that a process as important as the room ballot is conducted in a perfectly transparent way, as is standard convention.
- It is unfair to ask JCR members to stand by a ballot where the only safeguarding measure is implicit trust.
- A second ballot would ensure there is maximum transparency and would set a precedent for how future ballots are conducted.
- The Accommodation Manager has assured Committee members that a re-ballot would not incur any delays to the room allocations.
This JCR therefore resolves to:
- Mandate the President, I.T. Rep and/or Domestic Rep to redo the room ballot where there are witnesses to the randomisation process, thereby achieving full transparency and maintaining trust within and across the JCR Committee and members.
