Who are we?
Jacari is a student charity providing home tutoring for disadvantaged children aged 6-16 who don’t speak English as their first language. Our 170 pupils speak languages including Arabic, Bengali, Croatian, Czech, Kurdish, Polish, Portugese, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, Tetum, and Urdu. Our 200 volunteers, all students, provide 4,800 hours of free tutoring, worth around £57,000 annually.
What do we do?
Students spend an hour a week helping a child with their English language skills and general confidence. This one-on-one support has been proven to improve academic performance at school and raise the child’s confidence outside the classroom. We also run Mothers’ Classes, for local mothers to access English language support.
