Candidate for the position of Student Trustees
Honcques Laus
Empowering You to Hold the SU Accountable
Student Trustee Candidate Statement Form
Please outline your relevant skills and experience:
Why Honcques?
Your vote for me is a vote for empowerment for you and for all students.
I make no empty promises. I am here to act. My words are backed by action. When you vote for me, you choose to be heard and to be respected. As your representative, I will never remain silent when your rights are overlooked or your voice is ignored. I will challenge the Student Union when it falls short. I will hold the Student Union to account and ensure the officers fulfil their duties and deliver on their promises.
I am an outsider to the Student Union Board and that is my greatest strength. What we need now is an independent voice that dares to question a problematic status quo. I owe nothing to the established system and carry no baggage or fear. I am here to break the silence and to question everything that does not serve us.
Please outline your motivation for wanting to serve as a student trustee:
Students are tired of being ignored. We must demand more. Accountability should be the norm, not the exception. Transparency must be a right, not a privilege. You deserve a Student Union that listens, works and delivers. You deserve a Student Union that works for you, not against you. I am here to lead it.
Describe how you will support Oxford SU to continue to work for students’ best interests:
I am committed to promoting a culture of accountability, transparency, and free speech. I will endeavour to
1. Hold SU officers to account and monitor whether they have fulfilled their promises. Sabbatical officers’ manifesto promises must not be forgotten after the last election.
2. Challenge SU officers and staff in their work to maintain highest standards of professionalism and to ensure that they never stray from their duties and the interests of students.
3. Ensure the SU is acting in the best interests of students. I will make sure the SU decisions align with student values.
4. Make SU finance and governance more transparent and accessible for all students so you can see how SU money is being spent and understand the decisions being made.
5. Defend free speech and student journalism. I will vote to protect student newspapers like the Oxford Student, ensuring they have the freedom to criticise the SU without the threat of losing funding or control over their online platforms.
6. Restore student democracy. I will work to reduce unnecessary spending and to minimise unelected paid bureaucrats, reinvesting money in student activities and campaigns. I will also work to eliminate non-student trustees and help the SU restore a 100% student-led structure.
