Hi, I’m Lucy, a second-year PPE-ist and Merton JCR President. Alongside Nick and Kush, I've worked with the SU on the new Conference of Common Rooms Model and I'm passionate about making the SU a force for real, positive change. As Student Trustee, I’ll be a friendly, approachable point of contact and will work hard to represent your interests and ensure the SU remains transparent, accountable, and focused on what matters to students.

Student Trustee Candidate Statement Form
As JCR President, I’ve gained meaningful experience representing students at both college and University levels. A key focus of my work was improving communication between students and college leadership, ensuring that student voices were not only heard but taken seriously in decision-making processes.

I also worked closely with the SU during its recent transformation, which gave me valuable insight into its structures, priorities, and potential for impact. This experience has strengthened my belief in the power of student advocacy, and I’m particularly excited about the opportunities created by the new RepCom and CCR model to deliver real, lasting change across Oxford.
I am deeply passionate about the potential that the SU has to improve the student experience across the University. The SU sits on many influential University committees, giving it a unique ability to advocate for meaningful change for current and prospective students.

Having worked closely with the SU during the recent transformation process, I have seen firsthand the importance of strong student-led institutions. I strongly believe that CCR has the potential to radically improve student representation and participation as a forum shaped by students, for students.

I would be proud to work with Kush and Nick to contribute to this work as a Student Trustee, helping ensure the SU becomes a powerful force for positive change.
Accountability:
I believe Student Trustees must be visible and accountable to the students they represent. This includes improving the transparency of Trustee Board discussions and encouraging Trustees to attend SU democratic forums such as RepComs and the Conference of Common Rooms. Public accountability builds trust and keeps the SU grounded in the needs of its members.

Support for Student Projects:
Students across the University have innovative ideas and projects that would benefit from SU support. With a budget of over £1 million, the SU has the resources to financially and logistically back these projects. I would advocate for the revival of funding streams similar to the former Student Council Fund to help empower student-led change within the University and wider community.

Common Rooms:
Common Rooms are at the heart of the student experience, yet often face challenges in their interactions with colleges. I would push for the SU to increase training and support for Common Room officers, especially on how to navigate difficult college dynamics and advocate effectively for their members.

Transparency and Advocacy:
Sabbatical Officers represent students on some of the most significant University committees. I would like to see greater transparency around this work—regular updates on key issues, clearer communication of committee outcomes, and encouragement for students to get involved. When students are informed, they’re empowered to engage with the University and advocate for their interests.
