What is the British Sign Language Project?

In Michaelmas 2018, nearly 200 students registered their interest in learning British Sign Language (BSL) at Oxford. In response to this, Oxford SU Disabilities Campaign (DisCam) ran some informal sessions, but many people felt that they would prefer to learn from a professional instructor. DisCam contaced an instructor who runs termly BSL courses at Oxford Brookes and arranged for them to run a similar six-week course for Oxford students. This course will begin in 2nd week of Michaelmas term 2019, teaching BSL for beginners, as well as an overview of Deaf history and culture so that students can appreciate the significance of BSL to the Deaf community in the UK.

When does it start, and how can I get involved?

The sessions will be held on Mondays at 6:30-7:30pm, from 2nd-7th week of Michaelmas term 2019. There will be 20 places in total, and priority will be given to students who identify as D/deaf or Hard of Hearing should they choose to sign up.

Where is the course happening?

Sessions will take place in the Law faculty, on the corner of St. Cross and Manor Road.
