Pembroke JCR Ordinary Meeting HT7
Private Motion - Signing an open letter to MP Annalise Dodds about the treatment of Uyghur Muslims by the Chinese government
This JCR notes... that the ethnic group of Uyghur Muslims in the Xinjiang region are currently facing shocking persecution by the Chinese government. Over a million Uyghurs have been placed into internment camps, the conditions of which are inhumane and we in the UK have passively observed for too long. Uyghurs face the possibilities of indefinite detainment, separation of families, forced labour, ‘re-education’ and the destruction of their cultural landmarks. This has only accelerated during the pandemic, and Uyghur Muslims will likely face restrictions to observing Ramadan which begins in April (as in previous years). Female detainees of Uyghur ethnicity in region also face systematic torture, r*pe and surgical sterilisation. [Citations for all of the claims above can be found in the open letter attached to this email].
This JCR believes... that the Pembroke JCR must do its part in ensuring that Universal Human Rights are upheld. Signing a petition to Anneliese Dodds MP will help generate international condemnation of the treatment of Uyghur Muslims, thus demonstrating solidarity with these people and condemning the actions of the Chinese government.
This JCR resolves... to mandate the President to, on behalf of the JCR, sign this open letter to Annalise Dodds as MP for Oxford East in which Pembroke is located: https://forms.gle/eoDRZZoiW5aibGqy9
