What is a Divisional Representative (Div Rep)?

Oxford's academic structures, Divisional Boards, divisional committees, and Graduate Joint Consultative Committees are where real decisions about your education are made. Div Reps are the students in those rooms.

Div Reps participate as full members of high-level committees, with a direct voice in   curriculum, assessment, and academic policy decisions at the University of Oxford.

Each division has three Div Rep positions, Undergraduate, Postgraduate Taught, and Postgraduate Research, plus two dedicated roles within Oxford Lifelong Learning.

What you will be doing

As a Div Rep, you will take on a range of formal representational and engagement duties throughout the academic year.

Representation
  • Sit on your Divisional Board and divisional committees, including the Quality Assurance Committee, EDI Panel and Graduate Joint Consultative Committee
  • Chair your division's termly Student Representative Board
  • Attend and contribute to the Academic Representation Working Group (once per term)
  • Attend and contribute to the Oxford SU committee for Postgraduate Taught students (once per term)
  • Represent your division at the Conference of Common Rooms (twice per term)

Engagement & accountability
  • Gather and relay student feedback to divisional and university governance structures
  • Build working relationships with course representatives across your division
  • Collaborate with sabbatical officers, fellow Div Reps, and divisional administrators
  • Contribute to policy research and evidence-based advocacy work
  • Submit termly reports detailing your activities, achievements, and challenges
  • Remain accountable to your student constituency and keep them informed of your work

What you will gain

The Div Rep role offers substantive experience in governance and advocacy that is difficult to build elsewhere. Past Div Reps have directly influenced assessment policy, improved postgraduate researcher representation, and driven lasting changes to academic structures at Oxford.

Governance experience

You will work within Oxford's formal committee structures, developing a working knowledge of how one of the world's leading universities makes decisions.

Professional network

You will work closely with Oxford SU's sabbatical officers and a broad network of student representatives across the University.

Advocacy & policy skills

You will develop skills in stakeholder engagement, evidence-based advocacy, and representing complex student issues in formal settings.

Training & support

Full training is provided by Oxford SU, alongside termly 1:1 meetings with our Policy and Representation Coordinator (Education) throughout your term.
