Men's Mental Health

Thu 07 November 2019 17:30-19:00, Cohen Quad, Exeter College, Walton Street

In England, around 1 in 8 men have a common mental health problem. However, many are reluctant to seek support for their mental health or disclose mental health problems to loved ones. They have been found to be less likely to access psychological therapies than women, with males making up only 36% of referrals to Increasing Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) and are more likely to use potentially harmful coping methods such as drugs or alcohol in response to distress.

At this event, our speakers will each address various strands of men’s mental health, including eating disorders, BAME mental health and the pressures of the world of sport, drawing on their own personal experience to open up conversations surrounding this often ignored topic.

Featuring talks from:

Dave Chawner - Number 1 best selling author, award-winning stand-up, presenter and mental health campaigner.

Hári Sewell - Writer and speaker specialising in justice, equalities and ethnicity, race and culture in mental health.

Kearnan Myall - Former professional rugby player who is now studying for a DPhil here at Oxford, researching mindfulness and mental health in athletes.
