Role Title: Kitchen Assistant
Hours: Lunchtime shift 11:30am-3pm, dinnertime – shifts can be chosen to suit you
What does the role involve?
You will be assisting the Chef in the kitchen at O’Hanlon House, a hostel with 56 bed spaces that provides temporary accommodation and support to homeless adults. Clients, including both those with bed spaces, Sit-Up clients and Day Service clients are all able to get two hot meals a day, served from the O’Hanlon kitchen.
Tasks in the kitchen may include chopping vegetables, general food prep, loading and unloading the dishwasher and serving meals.
Why is this role important?
Having extra help in the kitchen makes a big difference as your help will mean we can serve up a selection of dishes and garnishes to give our residents more choice when coming in for lunch and dinner. We have one employee overseeing the kitchen and when there’s 200 people to feed for each meal every day that’s a hefty task!
How will I be supported by the organisation?
You will receive a full induction prior to getting started that will introduce you to the organisation and all the work we do. You will receive a full briefing on policies including health and safety and boundaries around working with our clients (particularly because they are vulnerable adults). You will have a named staff lead who will be your main contact in the organisation and you will be offered periodic sessions with the Volunteer Development Manager to review your volunteering and see if there’s anything that could be done to improve it.
Do I need any skills or qualifications?
Any experience cooking meals at home would be beneficial.
What will I gain?
You will go away after each shift with the satisfaction of having helped feed our clients a hearty and nutritious meal, many of whom may not have eaten that day without us. You will gain valuable experience that may be beneficial for your CV in the future.
