Student Consultation

Fees and Finance

What students were consulted? How were they consulted? What were their feedback?
Aaliyah JCR, subject chat and friends survey/ private discussion A full refund of fees seems unlikely, it'd be better if we look at compensation/ partial refund rather than full refund.
Gurpreet
Jade SU Class Act Campaign Group chat discussion
Mehrin Islamic Society/ Bangla Society/ Students of Colour Survey/ private discussion statistically POCs are more likely to be in a low income background, especially as they tend to be first generation university students. Thus, heavily affected when it comes to fees and finance. Those i spoke to agreed that fees should be lowered, especially in regards to the pandemic.
Otto College JCRs and MCRs Survey posted on facebook pages and sent to individuals This policy is unrealistic - tuition fee cuts only benefit the richest students due to the student debt system, and as the majority of people don't pay the loan in full, the main focus should be on reducing the interest rate to be in line with inflation. Controlling living costs is far more of a priority.
Rafiah Woman and non-binary: Bsoc, Isoc, College Chats, Friend Groups Groupchat Messages and Discussions, Google Forms Similar costs for everyone so not particularly affected
Zuhaira OUISOC, friend group, subject chat Created google survey Persons from low income backgrounds "Strongly agreed" to facing some form of worry when it came to affording tuition fees. The state educated students stated they felt at a disadvantage when compared to their privately educated peers.

Mental Health

What students were consulted? How were they consulted? What were their feedback?
Aaliyah JCRs and MCRs, students accessing the Oxford MH services private message / group discussion this policy is very important - there needs to be more support for students
Gurpreet
Jade SU Disabilities Campaign Private message / group discussion Chair said it looks good
Mehrin Islamic Society/ Bangla Society/ Students of Colour Survey/ private discussion Many POC's live in multi-generational householes thus moving out for uni can impact their mental health, especially feelings of loneliness. Pressure from teachers, parents and peers can also loom over them.
Otto JCRs and MCRs Survey/ private discussion "This is a really good policy, though if you implement your fees and finance policy it will become impossible to implement - mental health is what NUS can do more to help
Rafiah Woman and non-binary: Bsoc, Isoc, College Chats, Friend Groups Private Message, Surveys, Group Chat Discussion Whilst women are subject to bad mental health, most of the time it's not becasue they are a woman but due to other reasons instead. However sometimes there are reasons such as sexual assault or sexism that leads women in particular to have bad mental health
Zuhaira Students from low income backgrounds (on Crankstart Scholarships), OUISOC Google Survey, allowed to leave comments. Due to financial pressure on some of the students, it increased worry and anxiety.

Sexual Violence, NDAs and Relationship Abuse

What students were consulted? How were they consulted? What were their feedback?
Aaliyah JCRs and MCRs, subject chats, friends private message / group discussion This policy is comprehensive, and important to support.
Gurpreet
Jade SU It Happens Here Campaign Private message / group discussion Endorsement - said it was an 'excellent' policy
Mehrin Islamic Society/ Bangla Society/ Students of Colour Survey/ private discussion For many brown girls, moving out for university is the first time they get a lot of freedom. This can lead to getting into toxic relationships/ feeling pressured or overwhlemed by it all. From the form it is especially clear that many have never been in relationships prior to university and thus may not know what to expect/ how to deal with it. More resources need to be availabe in terms of relationship advice and consent.
Otto JCRs and MCRs Survey/ private discussion Wholly support this policy - is very pertinent and change must be delivered quickly.
Rafiah Woman and non-binary: Bsoc, Isoc, College Chats, Friend Groups Group Chats, Friend Groups, Goodle Discussion Women are often subject to sexual violence and sometimes feel uncomfortable on campus in certain situations. Most don't feel as if there is currently adequate support or resources in place. Most students don't know who to go to for support so this must be made clearer
Zuhaira OUISOC, college gcs, friend groups Google Survey and Groupchat Not really much difference in feedback betweeen classes.

Erasmus+

What students were consulted? How were they consulted? What were their feedback?
Aaliyah international students survey/ private discussion Most students hadn't heard of ERAMUS before, but would be interested in taking part
Gurpreet
Jade SU International Students Campaign Private message / group discussion Chair commented that they were in strong support of the motion and agree with all the points
Mehrin Islamic Society/ Bangla Society / students of colour Survey/ private discussion It is clear from discussions that some are not aware of Erasmus. However, after explanation many have said they would want to take part. All participants would have voted remain in the referendum.
Otto JCRs and MCRs Survey/ private discussion "There needs to be more information available about how the scheme works with the current course the student is on."
Rafiah Woman and non-binary: Bsoc, Isoc, College Chats, Friend Groups Google Form, Group Chat Messages A lot of people aren't aware of Erasmus, those who did said they'd be happy to take part
Zuhaira OUISOC, friends in Paksoc, International friends Google Survey and Discussion A significant percentage remarked that they were aware of what Erasmus was but weren't likely to participate in such a scheme. This could be again, because of financial pressures on people from low income backgrounds or a simple lack of support for those with estranged/no parents.

Student Housing

What students were consulted? How were they consulted? What were their feedback?
Aaliyah JCRs and MCRs survey/ private discussion most UGrad students spoken to have not rented private accomodation so feel this isn't applicable to them
Gurpreet
Jade Other low income students who have rented privately Private discussion Oxford is one of the most expensive cities to rent in, and an appreciation of that is good. Students are often exploited or treated poorly by landlords, and tenants unions are v helpful. Students need more support and information from universities
Mehrin Islamic Society/ Bangla Society/ Students of Colour Survey/ private discussion Many contacted have not had to deal with private housing due to college accomodations
Otto JCRs and MCRs Survey/ private discussion Seems a sensible policy, though there would also need to be support for landlords as equally it will be a disaster if the renting industry collapses.
Rafiah Woman and non-binary: Bsoc, Isoc, College Chats, Friend Groups Google Form, Group Chat Discussions Most haven't had to deal with private housing due to college accomodation. Some said they have chosen to live out due to wanting to have female only houses as opposed to shared accomodation in college
Zuhaira OUISOC, friends from St Peter's (second year private accom) Google Survey/ chats People from OUISOC hadn't really had to deal with this issue, however students at Peter's had. They believed the information and support given was limited and the support from the University could have been much more.

Cost of Living

What students were consulted? How were they consulted? What were their feedback?
Aaliyah JCR, Student chat private message / group discussion this sentiment of this policy is good and understood but, in practice, seems a bit confusing
Gurpreet
Jade SU Class Act Campaign Private message / group discussion Not specific but general positive response
Mehrin Islamic Society/ Bangla Society/ Students of Colour Survey/ private discussion Similar to fees and funding, many feel that they can't rely on their families for as much support due to be first gen/ low income backgrounds. Agreed that support is available at College.
Otto JCRs and MCRs Survey/ private discussion This policy is a challenge to understand, particularly the Real Living Student Wage. We should be tackling educational poverty as a priority
Rafiah Woman and non-binary: Bsoc, Isoc, College Chats, Friend Groups Group Chats, Surveys Cost of Living is generally similar for most students, however women may have extra costs for things such as sanitary towels. Agree with the Policies being suggested
Zuhaira Friends (Crankstart Scholars), OUISOC, some members of Paksoc Google Surveys, private message Sent a survey out and more than half of the responses of those people who had at some point been in care stated not enough had been done to aid their transition into university.
