Our multi-disciplinary research is world-renowned and we contributed significantly to Oxford's top rank in Clinical Medicine in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework results, the official UK-wide assessment of all university research.

The REF welcomed the strong return in orthopaedic sciences, as well as the outstanding reach and significance of the impacts from our research in musculoskeletal conditions and ageing.

We are the largest European academic department in our field and run a globally competitive programme of research and teaching.

Our co-location with NHS services at Oxford's Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre puts the department in an excellent and rare position, where researchers work alongside clinicians. This substantially improves research capability, improving access for researchers to patients, and facilitates the interaction between clinicians and scientists, which is essential for successful translational research.
